Goal 1
Team members learn about the new Common Core State Standards for Literacy, Speaking and Listening, examing how the Paideia seminar cycle can be used to address multiple standards.
Yellow-

March 2012 Work with CCSS for Literacy is on-going. Continued integration of the Paideia seminar cycle with CCSS in content areas is planned for next year.

Feb. 2012 Some work has been completed as a fellows group. Terry Roberts did training on first Fellows Day. Some work has taken place in CC Training at AMS. Speaking and Listening were addressed in November PD school-wide. Paideia was not necessarily discussed formally with the entire staff to determine connection to CCSS. AMS Faculty looked at CC, but need to continue. ACS Anchor standards should be the focus- they are the core of the common core and connected to Paideia.

Feb. 2012
  • December meeting of Paideia Fellows, revist CCSS and Paideia seminar.
  • Continue work in departmental groups.
  • Teaching Critical Thinking, chapter on converstation which applies to how conversation aids teachesr and students to translate thoughts into speech which increases ability to increase critical thinking. Fellows receive book for additional book study.
Goal 2
The Paideia Fellows team will develop at least four new seminar plans aligned with academic content, including strong pre- and post-seminar literacy activities. The team will also facilitate the sharing of these Paideia plans and implementation grade-level and school-wide.

Green- The following seminar cycles have been prepared and implemented:
Three school-wide seminars (The Little Red Hen, Robin Hood, Migrant Mother)
6th Grade LA/SS- Boccacio Text
6th Grade Science- Hippocrates Text and Galileo Text
6th Grade Math- Secret Numbers *to be completed in April
EC multi-grade math- Staircase seminar
7th Grade LA/SS- Imperialism vs. Colonialism quotes
7th Grade Science- Newton's Laws
7th Grade Math- Staircase seminar
8th Grade LA/SS- Child Labor text
8th Grade Science- Lifeboat Ethics
8th Grade Math- Family Race Problem *to be completed in April

Fellows team have collected post-seminar student writing samples, seminar maps, and pre- and post- content assessment questions.

Feb. 2012
Yellow- Science is the farthest ahead with writing new content based seminars. The science department has developed and are currently in content seminar cycle.
Have no math content seminars and no history content seminars
March 2012
  • Post final school-wide seminar on Intranet (Nick Rogowski)

  • Fellows will begin to create new plans for each grade level content (12 in total- 1 for each content for each grade level).
  • This process will begin with the December with the Fellows planning day.
Goal 3
Student literacy and communication skills improve after participation in multiple Paideia seminar cycles over the course of the school year.
March 2012
Yellow- Fellows team have analyzed preliminary data that shows evidence of improvement in student literacy and communication skills. Data sources include: Speaking and listening self-assessments, seminar pre- and post- assessment questions, writing samples, and interviews.
